CLASS SIZE: 20
This class is full of
techniques and lots of information that can be
incorporated into many different projects. You
will first layout and wood burn the gecko design
pattern, then the fun begins. You will learn
how to create the popular sand ripples, basic
stippling relief carving around the gecko,
stipple carve a southwest sun design and use the
easy, “no fail”, 2 step patina to create the
river effect. You will also learn how to blend
ink dyes to create the beautiful washes of color
on the gecko. Add in some basic wood burning in
a southwest design and a simple, but effective,
chipped rim treatment.
PLEASE BRING: Dremel w/flexible shaft, a
good quality dust mask, apron, adjustable heat
woodburner with blade tip, heat tool, craft
knife and the following carving burs; a wheel,
#191 ball bur, an inverted cone and a sanding
drum.
·Instructor will have some supplies available for
purchase the day of class
·If using a battery operated Dremel please be sure
to bring extra, charged batteries to carry you
through the day
·There’s a lot that is covered in this class so
students are encouraged to be prompt

SKILL LEVEL:
Beginner to advanced.
Like getting 3
classes for the price of one! In this class
you will first learn how to bring the gourd
to a high polish and apply ink dye, then you
will carve out the leaves using a “stick and
burn” method of carving, create the
dimension on the leaves using a Dremel and
then learn how to do easy, stippled filigree
carving around the leaves. Blend colors of
acrylic paint to create the changing autumn
colors and finish the rim with Gloria’s
chipping technique
Tools: Please bring a Dremel
w/flexible shaft and any carving burs you
have in your tool box, a good quality dust
mask, a heat tool, a 3D sander or a MicroLux
right angle disc sander w/transformer and an apron.

Join Maria at Davis Ranch Gourd Festival in
Sloughhouse, Ca. on Thursday, September
16th, 2010 for a day of gourd art. This
gourd is one of many shared in her book;
“New Gourd Art with Ink Dyes” so be
prepared for a day of fun and a lot of
learning.
Included in this fee is a Gourd (Approx.
6-7 inches) cut and cleaned and ready
for designing. The products, tools and
embellishments needed to complete this
project are also included. Please bring
a
woodburning tool which is a must
for this class. As an extra bonus,
Maria shares many of her techniques with
you during this class as this
information is very unique, making your
gourd art an enjoyable experience.

This jewelry class involves several
techniques designed by Maria. She
happily shares her pattern and
directions to complete this lovely
piece. You will learn how to create
patterns and how to transfer
patterns to your gourd with ease, in
addition, there is some woodburning,
color finishing, wire coiling and
finishing with leather and beads.
An oval Black Onyx cabochon is the
center focus and is surrounded by
coiled wire and black and silver no
hole glass beads.
What you can’t see in the picture is
the rest of the beaded necklace
which involves more black beads and
silver bead caps and then the
connection of the leather necklace
will be finished with the ability to
increase or decrease the length as
desired.
Included in this fee is a complete
kit to complete a gourd jewelry
piece, the use of products, tools,
beads and embellishments to complete
this project. Please bring a
woodburning tool which is a
must for this class.

Students will have their choice of a
cleaned, cut and sanded gourd. Each
student will receive a kit before
class that will have all the
supplies and direction sheet to
create this one of a kind drum.
Drums can be played by rolling it in
a circular motion which gives you
the sounds of the waves at the ocean
or you can also play it by tapping
your fingers on the drum head.
Students will have the opportunity
to use the Stewart Superior Inks and
Earth Safe Finishes on this project.
Drum and drum head will be sealed
with clear Marine Satin varnish.
Students can use these techniques
and products on any project they
make. Learn how to check for pin
holes on a goat skin when purchasing
one & how to cut the skin to fit the
gourd and how to attach it to the
ring.
Students will wrap their ring with
material and how to finish it off.
We’ll be using nylon cording to
string the drum and how to pull the
cording tight and make the drum head
have a beautiful sound to it.
Students will finish off their drum
by stamping or tracing on a pattern
on the goat skin and then adding
some color to their design. Each
student’s drum will play a different
sound and will be a one of a kind
piece of art.
Students
need to bring a heat gun if they
have one, one of these round brushes
#1-#2 or#3 and a nice small #6 or #8
flat brush and a ¾ or 1 inch flat
brush) an awl and apron to class.

Students will have
their choice of a constructed doll
all parts will be washed, cleaned,
cut, sanded and stacked. This way
students have more time on
techniques and construction,
decorating and embellishing and not
cleaning, cutting and sanding.

The doll body takes 9 gourds cut in
different ways to make one body.
This will be done for you as it is
very time consuming. Kathy will go
over how all the parts were cut and
stacked.

Students will wood burn simple
designs on the dolls dress, pots and
basket that she carries.
·
Students will use Earth Safe
finishes and Stewart Superior Inks
to decorate their dolls. Kathy has
“GONE
GREEN” we will be working
with products that are safe for the
artist and the earth.
Products are
non-toxic, ECO safe,
water based with
little to NO VOC’s.
·
Students need to
bring a wood burner & 1A or a chisel
tip pen to burn deep lines, mask,
apron, dremel with a small round
carving bit and a #59 or #60 drill
bit. Kathy will have drill bits and
round caving bits for sale if you
don’t have them that small.
Decorative wood burner and tips if
you have them Kathy will have
several in class. If you don’t have
a dremel or rotary tool Kathy will
have one on hand for students to
use.

project.

Skill level Beginner to advanced
This project will be a bowl with a
three rod wale weave with roller rim
to inside of gourd; finished inside
with gourd paper and outside with
linen bark and acrylic or gourd
stain ( your choice ) and inserted
real leaves. This class will teach
you tenquies you can use in
conjunction with other gourd
projects. You will re cut your gourd
with a round or roller coaster rim.
Learn to insert spokes and the three
rod wale weve with rolled rim. You
will learn the tenquie how to insert
gourd two sided paper to finish the
inside of your gourd. It is
beautiful. You will learn the
application of linen bark to the out
side and how to insert real leaves
in and under the bark. You will then
apply with a brush or sponge the
finish of your choice with diluted
acrylic paint or gourd master stains
over the entire gourd to complete
this beautiful piece of art. WE WILL
START ON TIME.
Please bring dust mask, general tool
box including pencil, cloth
measuring tape, drill, 3/16" bit,
micro mine saw, needle nose pliers,
heat tool, old wash cloth, sm.
bucket to soak rod in, old clothes,
apron if desired.

In this class you
will be amazed at the detail and
definition you will get out of
carving and egg gourd into a
dimensional, detailed gourdgeous
piece of art. You need to bring your
rotary tool, mask and any Dura-Grit
Burrs you have in your set. I will
have burrs available for sale and
use in the class. Each student
should be able to complete the
beautiful one of a kind piece of art
at the class.

We will be creating
necklaces from gourd shards, layers
of clay and watch pieces as well as
other metal accompaniments. Each
necklace – students will create two
pieces each – will be unique and
totally up to the student as to
color combinations, watch/metal
pieces used, etc.
We will then use leather for cords
and the students will create their
own clay beads as well as adjustable
clay closures.

Techniques taught: Using a
rotary tool and tungsten-carbide
bits students learn to carve
waves, engrave filigree, carve
feathers/leaves, and inlay
heishe and stones on the gourd
surface.
Will student leave with finished
project? This class is to learn
carving techniques. Students
will not leave with a totally
finished gourd project.
